When Charan boards his flight to Delhi on the way to IAS training, he finds a young woman already sitting in his booked seat. She asks him to trade. The young woman, Indra Lekha, watches the entire exchange in silence, and something rises inside her, sharp and wordless, the particular kind of feeling that arrives when a person feels they have been measured and found less deserving, for reasons they cannot quite name or accept.
What she does not yet understand is that both answers came from exactly the same place inside him. Charan said no to her out of honest preference, and yes to an elderly man out of honest kindness, with no performance in either decision.
Why This Small Moment Sets Up the Entire Novel
It is a masterstroke of quiet characterisation. Before readers learn anything about Charan’s UPSC rank, his family or his ambitions, they learn something more important, exactly how he makes decisions when nobody is watching for the right answer. That single trait, honest and consistent regardless of who is asking, becomes the foundation for everything the novel later reveals about duty, love and public service.
