Blind following takes root when a person accepts a belief because it is familiar, old, repeated by elders, approved by the group, or protected by fear.
It rarely announces itself as blind. It arrives instead through a child standing beside a parent during worship, watching incense smoke rise, watching adults arrange their bodies into familiar postures of reverence. The child does not understand the theology behind the gesture. The child understands something more immediate: the adults who provide safety and continuity treat this moment as serious, and that seriousness is itself an instruction requiring no words.
What enters the child is not only a religious practice. It is an entire emotional architecture, the association between certain movements and the feeling of being held within something larger than individual experience.
Borrowed Belief Is Not a Failure of Intelligence
I want to be honest about something important: borrowed belief is not a personal weakness. It is the starting condition of every human mind that has developed inside a social environment, which is to say, every human mind without exception.
The child absorbs the family’s faith before understanding its basis. The young person takes on the community’s standards before examining their origins. The adult carries forward warnings, customs and inherited emotional responses with the same unthinking ease the body carries its posture, largely without awareness that what feels like personal conviction may, in significant part, be received social furniture.

The Distinction That Matters Most
The distinction between borrowed belief and examined understanding is not the distinction between wrong and right, or between tradition and progress.
A person who examines a belief honestly may return to it with deeper conviction than before. A practice that has survived scrutiny is not weakened by having been questioned, it is strengthened. What matters is not whether the belief is old or new, comforting or demanding. What matters is whether it has been tested through truth, compassion and practical judgement, or whether it has simply been running on the momentum of inheritance.
Clear Seeing Begins With Courage, Not Certainty
The image of enlightenment in Buddhist art, the seated figure beneath the Bodhi tree, is not a description of an unreachable condition. It is a direction.
Every viewer who stands before that image brings a mind doing what the ordinary mind always does: moving between borrowed certainties, inherited reactions, social expectations, and the low-level anxiety of someone who has not yet fully examined what they are carrying, or why.
Clear seeing begins when the mind becomes brave enough to look directly, at its own habits, at the beliefs it defends most vigorously, at the social patterns it performs most automatically.
This is not about rejecting faith, family or tradition. It is about refusing to let repetition alone stand in for understanding.
What This Asks of the Reader
For modern society, the lesson is not complicated, even though living it is difficult: inherited belief must be tested through truth, compassion and practical judgement. Seeing clearly is the beginning of responsible living.
The communities that gathered at Sanchi, that walked the pradakshina and offered flowers at carved thresholds, were doing exactly what modern people are still doing, trying to live meaningfully inside social conditions that both support and constrain the quality of awareness they are capable of.
The world has changed its surfaces. The human mind continues to struggle with many of the same forces.
