Sutika: Why Postpartum Care Is Parenting Too

When a child is born, everyone’s eyes turn toward the baby. But in the midst of this excitement, the mother is sometimes forgotten. Her body, her spirit, her exhaustion, these too need tending.

What Is Sutika?

Vedic Sanskar: From Garbh to Growth explains that in Ayurveda, the word sutika refers to a woman after delivery, usually for forty days. The Charaka Samhita describes this period as one of vulnerability and renewal, comparing it to how earth, after harvest, must be nourished before the next crop.

Guidelines from this tradition emphasize rest as foundation, not indulgence but medicine, alongside light warm foods to rebuild digestive fire, and oil massage, abhyanga, to calm the nervous system and offer grounding, tangible touch and care.

The Mother’s Wellbeing Shapes the Child’s

The deeper parenting concept here is simple but often overlooked. The way a mother is cared for in these days becomes the soil in which her parenting grows. If she feels neglected, her reservoir of patience weakens. If she feels supported, she can offer her child not just milk, but emotional stability.

A depleted parent cannot offer abundance. To nurture the child, the nurturer must be nurtured first.
