A disciple once asked a wise teacher, “When should I begin raising my child well?”
The teacher did not answer immediately. Then he smiled and said, “You’re twenty years late. You should’ve started with yourself.”
Dr Ajay Bajpai returns to this story often, because it captures the entire foundation of what he set out to teach in Vedic Sanskar: From Garbh to Growth.
Dharma, Not Just Duty
In the Vedic tradition, parenting was never just about raising a child. It was seen as something far deeper, an act of dharma, of sacred responsibility, of shaping a soul’s journey long before it even took its first breath. In modern understanding, preparation for parenthood usually begins when two pink lines appear. But thousands of years ago, the journey began much earlier. The very thought of becoming a parent set the energy in motion.
The Garbha Upanishad, an ancient text that speaks of the soul’s journey into the womb, describes how the unborn child is aware, listening, feeling, even praying while still in the mother’s womb. Parents are not just caretakers of a physical form. They are welcoming a conscious being who has chosen them for a reason.
Children Absorb Who Parents Are
Manusmriti places the mother and father alongside the teacher and the divine, showing how seriously this responsibility was viewed. To think the journey begins only at birth would be like saying a tree starts with its first leaf. It begins with the thoughts of the parents, the prayers they offer, the food they eat, the emotions they feel.
“If a parent’s heart isn’t steady, where does the child learn to anchor?”
Children absorb who their parents are more than what they say, Dr Bajpai writes. If actions don’t match words, it is the actions a child will believe. That is why parenting, in this view, doesn’t start with diapers and baby books. It starts with the parent.
Science Is Catching Up to What Grandmothers Already Knew
What Dr Bajpai finds most fascinating, as a physician, is how modern science now echoes this ancient understanding. Epigenetics, the study of how external factors like stress, love and environment influence gene expression even in the womb, confirms what a mother’s emotional state during pregnancy shapes in her baby’s brain, immunity and temperament.
What researchers today call neuroplasticity, grandmothers instinctively understood when they said, “Ma ka mann saaf ho toh baccha sukh se badega.” The science and the spirit, he argues, are not separate. They are simply two languages saying the same thing.
The Seed and the Tree
There is an old Indian saying, “Jaisa beej, waisa ped.” As is the seed, so is the tree. Every thought, every action, every word becomes part of the unseen foundation.
Before the nursery, before the name, before the scan, there is silence. There is intention. That, according to Dr Bajpai, is where parenting truly begins.
