How to Tell If Your Dream Is Actually Yours or Borrowed From Someone Else

Here is a simple way to tell the difference, drawn directly from Own Your Ambition by life coach Puja A Pandey. A borrowed dream feels like something you are trying to convince yourself of. You can explain why it makes sense. You can list all the logical reasons for pursuing it. But when you imagine actually living that life ten years from now, something inside goes quiet in the wrong way.

Your own dream feels different. It might scare you. It might seem impractical at first. But when you imagine living it fully, something inside you leans forward.

Why This Distinction Matters So Much

For most of us, the honest childhood answer to what do you want to be when you grow up got replaced very quickly with the acceptable one, doctor, engineer, government job, CA, something with a clear salary and a storyline relatives could explain at family gatherings without pausing to think.

The path was laid out before you were old enough to question it, and for a long time, you walked it because that is what you were shown, that is what felt safe and that is what everyone around you seemed to agree on.

The Test Worth Trying Today

Grab a piece of paper and write down three things you would pursue if nobody whose opinion mattered could see what you were doing. Then look at what you actually spend your time on right now, and write down whether it connects to any of those three things.

The gap between those two answers is your starting point.
