The Day a Grain Cargo Was Rejected Because of Coal Dust

Fertilizer to grain. Ammonium nitrate residues dissolved in humidity during an Indian Ocean voyage, migrating into a wheat cargo. The result: a 60,000 tonne cargo rejected at the Middle Eastern destination, sold at 70% loss for industrial processing, cargo claims exceeding $8 million.

Cement to coal. Residual cement dust increased the coal’s ash content, reducing its energy value below acceptable thresholds. The cargo was rejected by the receiving power plant, and the vessel was redirected to an alternate discharge port at the owner’s expense, adding three weeks to the voyage.

Coating damage to iron ore. Deteriorating hold coating released paint chips that mixed with the ore during transit. A steel mill penalized the shipment $430,000 for non-metallic contamination traced directly to coating fragments.

Chemical residue to soybeans, in 2021. Trace petroleum products detected in a soybean cargo shipped from Brazil to Europe, residues traced to incomplete cleaning months earlier. The entire cargo was rejected under food safety regulations.

The Thread Connecting Every One of These Cases

What connects all four scenarios is a common thread. The contamination was invisible or insignificant at the time of loading. It only became detectable, and financially catastrophic, at the discharge port, thousands of miles and several weeks later.

Cargoes destined for human or animal consumption, grain, sugar, soybean meal, rice, operate under the strictest cleanliness requirements in bulk shipping. The margin for error is measured in parts per million. Contamination invisible to the naked eye can trigger full cargo rejection once laboratory analysis is performed at the discharge port, transforming a successful voyage into a multi-million-dollar liability.
